Running time: 80 minutes
In Lowell Bartholomee's blah, blah, blah, eight Texans
offer 11 comedy sketches that have a lot more zip than the title
suggests. Borrowing a joke from The Onion, "One Small Step"
imagines Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong discussing what to say when
they land on the moon. Aldrin's best suggestion: "Holy shit, we're
on the fucking moon!" "Showtime" takes reality TV to the next level
when Trey and Suzanne meet on a blind date and discover that they
are both filming movies of their lives. ("I have to remember to say
'Fuck' at least three times a day so I can get a PG-13," Trey
explains.) The final sketch, "Bob's Birthday" about a man who fakes
his own surprise party, is a tour de force which is best left
unexplained here (let's just say it's a must-see). Some of the
sketches run a tad long and a few jokes are overextended, but
overall the ideas are clever, the acting strong and the direction
perfectly paced.—Ellen Carpenter
